Spider and Tipps (Plus Lucy Finds a Home)

Spider came from a one-bedroom apartment that housed 19 cats while Tipps came from a house that had 40 dogs.

Spider was rescued from a Bronx one-bedroom apartment where his owner was keeping 19 cats.

Unfortunately, animal hording is common in the city. What makes this situation uncommon was the horder.

“He was a young guy, a male in his 20s,” said Sean Casey, founder of Sean Casey Animal Rescue where Spider and 11 of his roommates were brought on Jan. 31.

Five of the cats from Spider’s home have been adopted, but Spider remains.

Casey says he’s “super affectionate.”

“He wants to climb right out on you and sit on your shoulder like a bird,” Casey said, adding that he’s (obviously) good with other cats and would, like most cats, do fine with a dog.

Also from the home of a horder is Tipps, a relative of . Both came from a house that had 40 dogs. Tipps loves people, but, since he didn’t get out much (if ever) before, is still getting used to the outside world and gets a little nervous on walks, Casey said.

But he’s great with other dogs, cats and kids, according to Casey.

“He loves to be pet and he’s very playful – he just loves to play and run around,” Casey said.

Meanwhile, , one of Spider’s former roommates, has found a home though what Casey can only call fate.

A Park Slope woman and her son, who was about 11, came into the shelter when nearly all the cats were out at an adoption event, Casey said.

“Lucy was scheduled to go to the event, but I forgot to grab her,” Casey said. Casey was about to send them to the adoption event, but he decided to show them Lucy first.

When he brought her in, Casey said, “the mother’s jaw dropped. She said it looked exactly like the cat she had growing up.”

“It was fate,” he said. “She missed the bus for the right reasons and everyone was happy.”

Both Tipps and Spider are spayed, dewormed, treated to prevent fleas & ticks and are up to date with vaccinations. The adoption fee is $100 for cats and $200 for dogs, which includes a veterinary exam, one free month of pet health insurance and a microchip.
