School's Out, But Kids Events Abound

It's a drag, we know. A random day of school closings for "Chancellor’s Conference Day." 

But on the bright side, there are several special events going on today, not to mention the full menu of weekly events, some of which could work for grade-schoolers as well as younger kids.

Special Events:

 To launch this year's summer reading program, the Brooklyn Public Library will have live music, children's theater, a magic show, a zumba class, face painting and balloon animals (.) , 10 Grand Army Plaza, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Free. 

 Exactly who is playing is a little unclear. According to Candy Rush's Facebook page, his name is Brian and he used to play with "a world touring band with a top 40 record."  733 Franklin Ave. bet. Sterling and Park, 10:30 a.m. $5 suggested donation.   

 Try out the children's music class for kids ages birth through three and the grown ups who love them. , 184 Underhill Ave. bet. St. Johns and Sterling, 10 a.m. Free. 

 Public schools are off, and Brooklyn teen virtuosos Wolfe Edelman and Joanna Wagner are on! The hum of the city’s subway comes to life in this mid-week family concert of jazzy vocal and guitar.  For all ages. New York Transit Museum, Corner of Boerum Pl & Schermerhorn St, 1:30 and 3:30 p.m., Free with museum admission (adults $7, kids 2-17 and seniors $5).  

Weekly Events:

 Lloyd of the Deedle Deedle Dees leads a 45 minute sing-along. , 755 Dean St (at the corner of Underhill Ave), 10:30 a.m., $5/family.

French Storytime French stories and songs. Great for children of French families or parents looking to expose their kids to a new language. Mini Max Toys & Cuts, 151 Atlantic Ave (at Clinton St), 10 a.m., all ages, Free.

Transit Tots Stories, games and more. Ages 2-5. New York Transit Museum, Corner of Boerum Pl & Schermerhorn St, 11 a.m., Free with museum admission (adults $7, kids 2-17 and seniors $5).  

Sea Lion Feedings This daily event features the Prospect Park Zoo sea lions showing off their dives, catching fish mid-air and other tricks. , 450 Flatbush Avenue, 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m., Free with zoo admission of $8 adults, $5 kids 3-12.

 The Carousel is open Thursdays through Sundays and school holidays, 12 to 5 p.m. $2 per ride; $9 for a book of five tickets. Enter Prospect Park at the Willink entrance, located at Ocean and Flatbush Avenues and Empire Boulevard.
