5 Things: Free Canoe Class, Beethoven in the Park and Franklin Ave. Kids Day

Prospect Heights-area subway, alternate side and event information you won't want to miss.

 

1. You need to do something different. Head to Prospect Park for a  for adults and kids 8 years old and up, led by urban park rangers. Meet at the Audubon Center at the Boathouse, near the Lincoln Road/Ocean Avenue entrance, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free.

2. You need a concert in the park. Head to Fort Greene Park to hear a concert by the String Orchestra of Brooklyn, which will perform Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. Bring a blanket. Fort Greene Park, Dekalb Avenue and S. Oxford St. 6 p.m. Free.

3. You need to get creative. Head to the  for  where participants will create bold, graphic works of art by combining thread and paper with images and text. 200 Eastern Parkway at Washington Avenue, 2 p.m. $15. Participants must register online or in person at the Museum's Visitor Center. 

4. You need to get the kids out of the house. Head to Crown Heights for , a carnival with water slides, a bouncy house, games and even a small Ferris wheel. Franklin Avenue between Sterling and Park, 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Free.

5. You need to know if your train is running ... and if you have to move your car. There are no planned service changes affecting Prospect Heights stations all weekend, according to the MTA, and alternate side parking rules won't be suspended again be until Wednesday, August 15 for Feast of the Assumption. (And the next non-Wednesday suspension is on Monday, August 20 for Idul-Fitr), according to the NYCDOT.
