Man Shot to Death on Sterling Place

A 20-year-old man died at Kings County Medical Center tonight after he was shot twice in the chest on Sterling Place between Franklin and Bedford avenues.

A 20-year-old man died at Kings County Medical Center tonight after he was shot in the chest on Sterling Place between Franklin and Bedford avenues, according to police.

The man was shot inside 709 Sterling Place, just before 7:49 p.m. tonight, according to an NYPD spokesman.

Two "unknown" men fled on foot, according to the police.

Danny Tong, who was working at Kings Wok, when the shooting took place, said he believed there were a total of three shots.

"I heard 'bam, bam, bam,'" he said.

The victim was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, according to police.

About an hour after shooting, the intersection of Sterling Place and Bedford Avenue was still blocked to traffic. An officer and a detective guarded the door of the three-story brick apartment building where the shooting took place.

A pair of detectives were canvassing door-to-door, looking for witnesses.

Editor's Note: March 14, 4:05 p.m. The NYPD corrected their initial report. The victim was 20, and he was shot once in the chest. Story corrected above.

So sorry to hear about the young man that was killed, but this goes on 24/7 in our communites. Only ignorance and self hate can cause our young people to kill each other so readily. Also why are guns available so easily? We seem to take it as a given that we should live with the threat of losing our children, family, and our own lives to gun violence at any time. Many of us are quick to blame the victims by thinking they brought it on themselves. Somehow it gives us cover for not coming together and doing something to improve the quality of life in our own community.

709 Sterling Place is a weed spot. There are Crip gang members livin' on the top floor, in the midle apartment. The cops know this, the weed buyers of Brooklyn know this -- everybody know this. Walk by 709 Sterling and that middle window be always open. That because Crips are always on the lookout. The owner of the building is a woman by the name of Jeanette Elliot, and her son is the main weed slinger. His name is Sonny. People come by and yell out his name, and he throws down the key to open the door -- if the door ain't alreddy open. They open up the door and go up to the apartment an he sells them the weed. This kid was probably doing a buy, and he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Word on the street is that Sonny was supposed to be got.

You want to know his supplier? it's a Jamaican dude who lives across the street. He has a white grill on his door. He has a head full o dreadloks, and usually he has on a big ol hat to cover it up. I think its 696 Sterling, but that address could be wrong. 709 sterling is full of bad history man. A couple of months ago some dude shot himself in the hand. This dude is one of the sons of the Jamaican dude who lives across the street. That police cap'n is cryin crocodile tears like he dont know the deal. He gotta know the deal. He GOTTA know about the jamaican dude, and 709. You know how many times the cops ran up in there between now and last year this time? How many fingers and toes you got? The cops know the deal. they gotta know. people on that block, includin' my moms is scared to death about what's goin on. They call 311, they call 911, and nothin happens. when i visit my mom I always see the action goin on at 709. nah, the cops know. somebody high up decided too much money is made, so they turn a deaf ear and a blind eye. As long as the n----as are killin each other, nobody cares. How the capn gonna say nobody call 311 when he knows its a drug spot? ?

I don't know who the H*ll jeremiah smith is or what he thinks he knows but he doesn't know Joseph battle. Joe was one of the most respectful caring considerate individuals I've ever met. If you don't know anything about the man why are you speculating on why he was in that building. Regardless of were he was or what he was doing he did not deserve to die the way he did. His family should be commended for the wonderful job they did raising this amazing young man and my deepest sympathies go to them and all of the people who thought of joe as friend. The world lost one of the few individuals remaining in this world of conformers and imitators. I was truely blessed to have known him. There is a place in hell reserved for all involved in his death. R.I.P. My friend.

Does anyone know what the incident last night was about? I saw a large group of people with bats, pipes and other weapons smashing cars and vandalizing anything in reach last night around 10:30-11pm.

Keep an eye out and speak up. Providing info when a 20 yr old gets killed is not snitching. Police don't make a neighborhood safe. Neighbors make a neighborhood safe. Speak up.

some one shot may son and the killer is still out thier to kill some ones kid again. the cops see these guys every day .
anonymous April 06, 2011 at 08:42 PM
i live next door & heard the shots. no cops arrived until nearly ten mins later (even though they're always standing at every block). i watched the scene from my window from the second i heard it till about 45 mins and never once saw the perp. watched them wheel the victim out on the gurney, i knew he was dead even as they were putting him in the ambulance, his arms were hanging off and motionless. when the cops came to my door to interview they all said the same thing, everyone heard the shots but no one has any info. it's so sad, i hope the victim's family sees justice. RIP p.s. i was also home a few days later when the group of men with crowbars / bats were smashing up all the cars on the block... a guy driving by stopped, got out of his car and started yelling at them. when the cop showed up, he asked the guy if anyone got shot, when he said "no, but they're smashing up everyone's cars" the cop got back in his car and left. the NYPD doesn't care about any of the violence. they'd rather just act oblivious and not do anything about it.

Thank you for your kind words about joseph. His family is still struggling with this act of violence. We pray that the person (s) involved will be brought before the courts to answer for this crime. However, we are a family of peace and we believe that God wants us to pray for those who are involve and that the will one day have a heart to come forward and help the family start to heal. J.R. Whatever someone had to say that will bring some atteniton to this case and bring the person to pay for this taking of a life. The family thanks you for your support and kind words. J. R. You are so right. However, we have done this to each other, Putting fear into each to each other. Nor speaking out is what keeps these things to continue to happen. when the young blacks start to get angry enough to come together and put an end to these types of crimes. Thank you J. R. Floyd Joseph's Aunty

You might be right, but however, at least some is saying something. J. R. Floyd Joseph's aunty
