Cop of the Month: Officer Jonathan Caro

A hunch, an investigation and finally an arrest in a string of burglaries leads to this month's award.

Officer Jonathan Caro has been honored as February's Cop of the Month after his careful investigation led to the arrest of a teen in a string of burglaries in between Nostrand and Albany avenues last month.

The arrest began with a hunch: A cab driver called cops to report that a teen left a duffel bag in his cab. When Caro was called to the scene, he could have simply reported the abandoned bag. But he suspected something was off.

Caro discovered that the teen had taken the cab from the scene of a burglary to his own apartment. Cops got a warrant, searched the apartment and found property allegedly taken during a cluster of break-ins. The teen was charged in five burglaries and is currently in jail, said Deputy Inspector Elvio Capocci.

“He could have written it up as lost property and left it at that. Instead he took the extra time to make some phone calls and collect the dots,” Capocci said.

The burglaries were part of a cluster of January break-ins between Nostrand and Albany Avenues in which the thieves came in through an unlocked window—often by pushing in an unlocked air conditioner.
