What's That Red On That Fig Tree?

If you look closely at the fig tree on St. Mark's Avenue and Flatbush, You will notice that it has been recently pruned, And the ends of some branches are a purple or red color.

That my friend, Is the secret to the tree's long life.

The purple and red is spray paint, which seals the end of the branches To keep the bugs from coming in, said the 30-year-old tree's owner, a Mr. Sharp.

While the tree has been a neighborhood resident since the late 70s or early 80s, Mr. Sharp has been here a bit longer since 1972.

And his careful tending to the tree has paid off. Later summer, the tree is overflowing.

"All my neighbors know to come over in August and get some figs," he said.
