5 Things: Russian Film, Community Board Meeting and Northside Festival

Brooklyn events you won't want to miss, plus today's alternate side information.

1. Be active. In your community. Tonight is the final meeting of Community Board 8 until fall. On the agenda: an update on tNYC's new hurricane evacuation zone map and unspecified votes on issues from the historic preservation, liquor license/sidewalk cafe and transportation committees. The meeting is at Calvary Community Church, 1575 Saint Johns Place at Buffalo Avenue at 7 (sharp). Can't make it? Patch is planning to blog it live.

1.5 Say 'Da' to Russian cinema.
Tonight is the last evening to catch the BAMcinématek and TransCultural Express series Russian Cinema Now. Tonight's featured films are Marina's House and Letter, two shorts touching upon eerie, depressed subject matter in wildly divergent ways. Which is, like, so Russian. $13. Screening begins at 7 p.m.

2. Hang with the hep cats (and their dads). The Tim Vaughn Trio will perform their jazz stylings at BarBés tonight from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. as part of the "Birth Day Presence Father's Day Drinks & Mingle" event. Say that five times fast as you sip your complimentary drink. But be sure to RSVP in advance.

3. Belt it out. Been itching to grab a mic since your last band imploded? Dust off your moves tonight at Rockstar Karaoke at Littlefield. Side bonus: There is a 90s Pop Quiz taking place to boot. Tickets are $10 in advance. The fun starts at 7 p.m.

4. Go North, young man. Every once in a while there comes a reason to leave South Brooklyn parts to visit our neighbors to the North. The Northside Festival—a four-day music series featuring music performances and film screenings at venues all over Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Buschwick—is one such occasion. Badges range from $25 to $260 and include access to after parties, happy hours and other great deals.

5. Move it or lose it. Alternate side parking is in effect according to the DOT.
