Where to Go With the Kids: Weekend Edition, June 2-4

Our weekend calendar of Brooklyn children's events in and around Prospect Heights, Prospect Park, Crown Heights and Park Slope.

 

Saturday, June 2

Greenlight Kids Story Time, This week, peter Brown, author of Children Make Terrible Pets, will read from his books and do a drawing. In addition, the shop will be holding a fundraiser for First Book-Brooklyn, the local chapter of the national nonprofit organization that provides new books to kids in need, and will donate 20 percent of all sales of children's books and toys to the organization. Ages 3-7. , 686 Fulton St. (at S Portland St), 11 a.m., Free.

 A full day of free admission and special programs to celebrate the opening of the . There will be West African cora music and activities for kids and adults. Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 990 Washington Ave., noon to 6 p.m. Free. 

 The Carousel is open Thursdays – Sundays and school holidays, 12 to 5 p.m. $2 per ride; $9 for a book of five tickets. Enter Prospect Park at the Willink entrance, located at Ocean and Flatbush Avenues and Empire Boulevard.

Lefferts House Events Today the historic house is hosting Race Around the Farmyard, where the whole family can participate in potato sack races, stilts and other old-fashioned games (2:30 to 3:30 p.m.). For older kids there are also  Second Floor Tours (1-4:30 on the half hour) Lefferts Historic House at Prospect Park (Use entrance at Empire Boulevard and Flatbush and Ocean Avenues), Kids free, $3 suggested for adults.

 Make all-natural and recycled crafts with a new project each week. The Audubon Center at the Boathouse (just inside the Lincoln Road/Ocean Ave. entrance to Prospect Park). 1-2 p.m., all ages, Free.

Transit Museum Events Today there are two events for kids at the museum: "Miles of Tiles," where kids discover the art of mosaic making that beautifies NYC's subway stations and then experiment with unique patterns and designs with glass tile (tor ages 4+, 1:30 p.m.); and "Transit Comic Strips" where kids will use archival and current photos of buses and subways and Comic Life software to design a transit- themed comic strip of their own (for ages 6+, 2:30 p.m., space is limited so get there early). New York Transit Museum, Corner of Boerum Pl & Schermerhorn St, 1:30 p.m., Free with museum admission (adults $7, kids 2-17 and seniors $5).  

Brooklyn Children's Museum Events The museum has events for kids all day. See their schedule here. 145 Brooklyn Ave. bet. St. Marks and Prospect. Free with admission of $7.50 for everyone 1 year and older.  

Princess Show at Adventurer's  Although out of our regular coverage area, this one is worth noting: Brooklyn is getting a Princess Show! Bring your little princess out to Adventurer's amusement park to enjoy this live 20-minute children's show. This free staged production features a singing Cinderella, a tumbling Tinkerbell, and lots of popular songs for your little Adventurer to sing along to as they help the Princesses solve a mystery! 1824 Shore Parkway (just off the Belt Pkwy between Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst, there's free parking or take the D Train to 25th Avenue). 5 and 6:30 p.m. Show is free, $3 per ticket for the rides.

Puppetworks' The Jungle Book Rudyard Kipling's 1894 fables of India
with an original song score adapted for Marionettes. Suggested for kids 3+. Reservations suggested at 718-965-3391 or puppetworks@verizon.net. 338 Sixth Ave. at Fourth Street. 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. $8 adults, $7 kids (note, no credit cards accepted). 

Prospect Park Zoo Events On Saturdays and Sundays, there are events for kids going on all day including sea lion feedings, keeper chats, close-up encounters with individual animals and more. See today's schedule here. , 450 Flatbush Avenue. Free with zoo admission of $8 adults, $5 kids 3-12.


Sunday, June 3

Morning Bird Walk: Local Nesters  Meet the local birds raising families in Prospect Park on this expert-guided walk. Meet at the Audubon Center at the Boathouse (just inside the Lincoln Road/Ocean Ave. entrance to Prospect Park). 8 a.m. Free.

Sunday Stories for Kids Come hear your favorite children's authors or bookstore staff read their latest books. , 143 7th Ave, 11-1 p.m., Free.

Transit Museum: See Art Make Art! Artist Antonio Masi’s dramatic paintings of bridges dazzle visitors in the Museum’s newest exhibit. See his work, then meet the artist! Masi demonstrates his unique watercolor technique and talks about why our city’s bridges so capture his imagination. Witness art in the making—and paint a bridge of your own in our Education Center. Monday, June 4 

Sea Lion Feeding This daily event features the Prospect Park Zoo sea lions showing off their dives, catching fish mid-air and other tricks. , 450 Flatbush Avenue, 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m., Free with zoo admission of $8 adults, $5 kids 3-12.

 Each week Annie Nieves will lead the group in an art project that promotes creativity and experimentation. The class also includes some independent play and concludes with music and a sing-a-long. For ages 2-5. , 755 Dean St. at Underhill. 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. $10/child ($5/additional sibling).

Tween Book Club A lively montly discussion for kids ages 10 to 12. The book for June is "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio. , Youth Wing, 4-5 p.m., Free.
