5 Things: Bash for Tom's Owner, Francine Prose and Leonard Lopate at Library, Fleece Fest, More

Prospect Heights-area information and events you won't want to miss.

1. You need to show your love for Tom's. Gus Vlahavas, the man who was the face of the Prospect Heights iconic diner  for 62 years. is moving to Colorado, and today politicians, customers, and even a marching band will converge for to give him a proper send-off. The event will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with a ceremony beginning at 11 a.m., in front of Tom’s, 782 Washington Ave. at Sterling Place.

2. You need to be in the same room with Francine Prose ... and Leonard Lopate. Luckily, she's doing a reading of "My New American Life," at the  today as part of the , hosted by WNYC's Leonard Lopate. 4 p.m. Free.

3. You need to get to the park, and also give back. Do both at once at  where park-lovers wil converge for a spring cleaning. Brooms, shovels, rakes and trash grabbers will all be provided. Prospect Park, Bartel Circle (15th St. and Prospect Park West), Free.

4. You need to get the kids out of the house. It's the annual  at the , where you can see the zoo's sheep get sheared, then go next door to Lefferts House to try washing, carding, spinning and weaving it into cloth. 5. You need to know if your train is running. There aren't any planned service changes affecting Prospect Heights this weekend (yay!). But note that the 2/3 and Q trains are all running local in Manhattan this weekend, so leave extra time, according to the MTA. As for parking, there's no suspension of alternate side until Memorial Day, according to the NYC DOT.
