Prospect Heights Streets Make it to Greenest Block Semifinals

Residential and commercial blocks in both Prospect and Crown Heights vie for the grand prize

 

The announced the semifinalists in its Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest, and there are many blocks in the neighborhood that made the cut.

The Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest promotes gardening along sidewalks, tree stewardship, and community development in †Brooklyn through block and merchant associations and other community groups, according to the contest's website.

In June, Washington Avenue Prospect Heights Association's Street Beautification Committee built tree guards and filled them with flowers ().

  • 60 Plaza Owners Corporation (Plaza Street East between Butler Place and St. Johns Place)
  • Washington Avenue–Prospect Heights Association (Washington Avenue between Prospect Place and St. Marks Avenue on the east side)
  • Prospect Heights Community Farm (St. Marks Avenue between Vanderbilt and Underhill)
  • St. Marks Avenue Prospect Heights Community Garden (St. Marks Avenue between Vanderbilt and Carlton)

 

Crown Heights semi-finalists are:

  • CHCA’s Franklin Avenue Merchants Association (Franklin Avenue between Park Place and Sterling Place, east side)
  • 1200 Dean Street Block Association, Inc. (Dean Street between Nostrand and New York Avenues)
  • Crown Street Block Association, (Crown Street between Bedford and Rogers Avenues)

Winners will receive cash prizes or gardening tools, and all participants will be awarded a recognition certificate.

In addition to prizes for residential and commercial blocks, prizes are also awarded for Greenest Storefront, Best Street Tree Beds, Best Window Box and Best Community Garden Streetscape. Winners will be announced in August.
