Nets Introduce Coach Kidd to Brooklyn

Former point guard will trade his sneakers for wingtips next season.

Jason Kidd could always handle an assist. Now we'll see how he does holding the clipboard.

In a press conference Thursday afternoon, Brooklyn Nets General Manager Billy King introduced former Nets point guard Jason Kidd as the team's new head coach.

"Jason is a proven winner and leader with an incredible wealth of basketball knowledge and experience," King said in a statement. "This will be a natural transition for him to move into the role of head coach, as he embodies the tough, smart and team-first mentality that we are trying to establish in Brooklyn."

King admitted to the media that Kidd was not on his radar when his coaching search began — in part because he hadn't yet retired from the NBA.

Kidd, who played seven seasons with the Nets, just finished a Hall of Fame-caliber career after playing a final season with the New York Knicks.

"Championship teams are built on being prepared, playing unselfishly and being held accountable, and that's how I expect to coach this basketball team," Kidd said in a statement. "I am truly excited about this next phase of my basketball career."

During the press conference at the Barclays Center, Kidd said he was very much looking forward to the challenge of putting a team on the court, as opposed to guiding one from the point.

What do you think? Will Kidd make a good Nets coach? Or does this job come too soon after the end of his playing career?
