Capoeira Brooklyn Leaves Flatbush Ave. For Gowanus

Raìzes do Brasil Capoeira Brooklyn, that lovely dance studio you could hear on the way to the Q Train, is moving from its second floor spot on the corner of Flatbush Avenue and Park Place to Gowanus.

Raìzes do Brasil Capoeira Brooklyn moves to Gowanus: Brooklyn's only full time Capoeira studio, founded by Andre and Ana Costa (Mestre Foca and Instrutora Rouxinol) in 2004 in Prospect Heights has found a new home and a new lead instructor.  The academy joins the ranks of artists and professionals moving to the revitalized Gowanus neighborhood. Our new address, 114 8th Street (between 2nd and 3rdAvenues), is just blocks from the R/F/G subway stop at 4th Ave and 9thStreet.


Capoeira Brooklyn will continue to offer month long introductoryclasses to absolute beginners, so if you know someone who has alwayswanted to try Capoeira, send them to Gowanus!  Raìzes do BrasilCapoeira Brooklyn upholds the tradition of this Brazilian art thatcombines dance, martial arts, acrobatics, and music. First establishedin Brazil by African slaves as a means to fight their oppression,Capoeira was outlawed and practiced in secret for many years.

The new lead instructor of Raìzes do Brasil Capoeira Brooklyn is EderFerreira de Souza. Known in the Capoeira world as “Instrutor Curu,”Eder began playing Capoeira in Brazil at age 11. He studied PhysicalEducation at Universidade Paulista and taught Capoeira to children andadults in his home town of Brasilia before he moved to Brooklynearlier this year.  Andre and Ana are proud to have Eder watch overthe Capoeira Brooklyn community while they continue to grow the Raìzesdo Brasil family in upstate New York.

Since its founding, Raìzes do Brasil Capoeira Brooklyn has providedNew Yorkers with a vital cultural arts center to experience some ofBrazil's richest artistic expressions: Capoeira, Maculelê, Samba deRoda, and Portuguese language. The group is active in the communityhaving performed at The Brooklyn Museum, The Hip Hop Festival, TheWest Indian Carnival Stay in School Concert, North Flatbush Ave BIDNational Night Out, and many other local events. The academy offersclasses six days a week teaching students from the age of 4 to 80 andhosts frequent visitors from the larger Raìzes do Brasil family.Guest instructors visit from California, Hawai’i, New Jersey,Wisconsin, and Brazil.  The original root of the group is in Brasilia,the capital of Brazil, where Ralil Salomão (Mestre Ralil) has beennurturing this art form and growing the good energy since 1976.
