Brooklyn's Sunset Park is a community that needs more work (1), has a significant Hispanic communityRead More including Mexican (2), and you'd be in Brooklyn! Near subways, to transport your workers, near highways to transport your product ... and lots of underutilized factory & industrial buildings near the underutilized waterways (3). Views of the Statue of Liberty (no, really!), ferry travel to Manhattan. (1) The median household income in 1999 U.S. dollars was $30,152, and the median family income was $31,247. The per capita income was $13,141; 27.9% of individuals and 26% of families were living below the poverty line. (4) (2) By 1990, Hispanics comprised 50% of Sunset Park's population, rehabilitating property values and developing a thriving community. There is an abundance of Hispanic restaurants and businesses along 5th Avenue. (4) (3) The neighborhood has access to three limited-access highways; the I-278 (Gowanus) and NY 27 (Prospect) Expressways as well as the Belt Parkway. Five New York City Bus bus lines serve Sunset Park: B9, B11, B35, B63, and B70. Three subway lines run through Sunset Park. The BMT Fourth Avenue Line (D N R) has stations at Prospect Avenue, 25th Street, 36th Street, 45th Street, 53rd Street and 59th Street. The BMT West End Line (D) has a station at Ninth Avenue. The BMT Sea Beach Line (N) has two stations at Eighth Avenue, and Fort Hamilton Parkway. For some time, New York Waterway service was available at the [closed] Brooklyn Army Terminal to Pier 11/Wall Street, the East 34th Street Ferry Landing, the Sandy Hook Bay Marina, or Riis Landing on summer Fridays. Ferry service was created in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks when the Gowanus Expressway and New York City Subway were at capacity. It was free from October 2001 until April 2003, when the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that it could not subsidize the service anymore. Then, until 2011 it was operated by the Red Hook, Brooklyn-based New York Water Taxi company on its Rockaway/Sandy Hook route. The Water Taxi service from the Brooklyn Army Terminal was part of the crucial contingency plan during the 2005 New York City transit strike. Much of the traffic between Brooklyn Chinatown, Brooklyn Satellite Chinatowns, and Manhattan Chinatown is handled by privately held minibus known in Chinese as "VAN 仔" and in English as "Chinese vans." They travel down 8th Avenue from 43rd Street to the 61st Street ramp to the I-278 bound for Manhattan and Queens. (4) (4) From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunset_Park,_Brooklyn

Neglected to mention; the fact that this high-elevation (for BK) neighborhood is near Upper New YorkRead More Bay means sea breezes to dispel spicy Sriracha sauce fumes. Better than the bituminous coal fumes of yesteryear.

should be done at all times not just during a speed week
knee jerk April 17, 2014 at 11:05 pm
Yes, cb, I think they could come up with some other catchy names for various crack-downs on the taxRead More paying public. How about "Click-it-or-Ticket Week" or "Text Week" or "No-Right-On- Red Week" or "PBA Week" etc, etc. This way you could stay home the week of your biggest weakness.
Bryan Rivera April 18, 2014 at 07:33 am
cb, maybe they should put speed cameras on every road and ticket everyone that drives 1 mile perRead More hour over the speed limit. Maybe they should take it a step further and monitor every single vehicle for location and speed and store it so they can find patterns in everyone's behavior and ticket even more efficiently. All of that would be completely free of charge, of course, because it doesn't cost anything to constantly police roadways.

I wonder when they plan on putting the CIA on trial for conspiracy to distribute these drugs...orRead More when they plan on going after the big pharma companies that are the main buyers of the product they're trying to get rid of. With everything the way it is, it is hard to believe that big government and big pharma is not colluding to produce huge profits at the expense of the addicts they cultivate. Look up zohydro...a drug ten times stronger than oxycontin. We have enough problems with oxy, why would you multiply that problem by ten?

Voting at PHYSICAL polling places. Now there's a component of elections that is antiquated andRead More should be done away with. Once Al Gore invented the internet we had no further need for PHYSICAL polling places - except for those who have no internet access or those like my mother-in-law who do not have a computer or understand the internet. Most of the country should vote on-line from the comfort of their own keyboard. The big question is WHY don't we?? Well, you could fret that the Federal Government might be incapable of building such a site, based on recent events. But the REAL reason is that to go to a website to vote you would have to positively IDENTIFY yourself. And, the left certainly would not want to create such a hardship on their fine, upstanding constituents.

Didn't the dead get up to vote in Chicago? If the dems don't like voter ID, why go you got to showRead More to enter the White House? Oh, I forgot it's closed.
Big_E April 18, 2014 at 09:04 am
What is the purpose of showing ID to vote? In order to vote here in NY, first I need to know whereRead More the polling place is. For me, it's an Elementary School on a side street I have never gone to before, or passed before when driving, except on Election Day. Then I need to know which election district I am in, as there are 2 or 3 EDs at the polling place. Then I go to the table, give my name, which if it's there, I have to sign my name, and they compare the signatures. What would showing ID do, if I still have to sign in? All it does, it slow down the process as people have to dig out their ID. Have you ever been behind a woman writing a check at the supermarket? It could take several minutes to find he wallet and her license. SO what does Voter ID do? Makes people wait. The lines get longer. People get discouraged and leave the line without voting. Republicans have restricted early-voting in areas where it's available. From 10 days, to 6. What 6? Oh, Monday to Saturday. Many poor people work 6 days a week, and have of only on Sundays, when they go to church and shopping and such. Also a time to vote. Nope, Sunday is now cancelled. Never needed a driver's license because you take the bus or subway? You need to go to DMV. DMV is only open Monday to Friday until 5pm. Closed holidays. Never needed a passport because you can't afford to travel overseas? Go to the post office! Oh sorry, closed Sundays...

Are these times more or less serious than the past times when such tetrads listed have occurred? MyRead More understanding of the history of the times listed give me no reason to suspect such to be the case. The only distinction is the ability for the news of calamity to spread faster and further than in those past times thus altering the perception of rarity. Growing up in a bible thumping habitat, I was given to understand that astrology is akin to devil worship so I find it ironic that those who would see god's kingdom manifest on earth selectively using astrology in arguing its imminence. If this tetrad is to satisfy the actual written word, there must be 4 Total Eclipses of the Sun turning it black to coincide with the 4 blood moons. This is just another cosmological event common in all solar systems. Wishing for the end of the world is certainly a means to realizing it once critical mass is achieved as well as the means to discontentment born of the twins, Disappointment and Frustration, until then. It's your future though so have at it but expect to reap what you sow.
StandfortheLord April 14, 2014 at 09:06 pm
Not sure why you bring up astrology. Did you mean astronomy? You understand correctly that astrologyRead More is of darkness...the fallen angel Kokabel taught man astrology. God tells us to look for signs in the sun, stars and moon. Not the planets. The Bible is very specific about that. A person of faith who very closely follows world events is able to connect the dots and see plain as day the unique times we are in. The end times described in the scripture, being the begining of satan's new age. To a person of little or no faith, this stuff means nothing but hogwash. To a Jew of faith, it's enourmous because it involves Israel. So as world war errupts this year or next, tell us all about how it's no big deal because world war has happened twice and it was no big deal.
Scott Peterson April 15, 2014 at 09:50 am
Astrology makes predictions of future events based on cosmological alignments of both planets andRead More the Sun and Moon in relation to constellations of stars. So what exactly is the difference if not the predictions and labels used? While the ancient writers of scripture surely associated celestial events with real world events by sensing a pattern, without knowing that the pattern is repeated throughout the universe, they could not know that it couldn't be personal. That the eclipse happened while the skies were overcast suggests that if it were a sign, few were able to see it. The logical question is to ask why God wouldn't have ensured there were clear skies so that the sign could be seen. Simply put, if it were in fact a sign, hiding it is counter productive. The significance of the world wars depends on from where and when you look at them. Significant to those who lived it to be sure but to those who came afterwards, perhaps less so. While tragic to those who suffered the effects of the times, the losses were replaced within 3 generations and the memory of those who experienced the times are fading as time moves on. Besides, if another world war is to happen, it, like everything else, must be by design of anything is. I do believe that everything happens because it is supposed to or nothing can, I just don't think it all happens for us as some seem to. My ego is healthy but to assume the entire universe was made for man alone is beyond my hubris.

folks, please stop trashing the Mystical church of Jesus over the horrible mistakes of the CorporateRead More church - stop using pedophile priests to denigrate Jesus -- He already warned us all of the demonic forces. Why do you think pedophiles join the church? To tear it down.
Buzz351 April 16, 2014 at 08:07 am
@ Christie, you are correct on why these pedophile priests joined the church. The Blessed VirginRead More Mother appeared to the children of Fatima and demanded that the pope ,along with all the bishops of the world,to consecrate Russia to her Immaculate Heart. After Vatican II the church was swamped with many new priests... many devout communists, Marxists who had no intention of serving God but to destroy souls, ala pedophile priests, and shut down the Catholic Church to forge ahead with their godless communists agenda. Our Blessed Virgin Mother promises a long period of world peace when/if the consecration of Russia takes place. With a large amount of communists infiltrated in the upper ranks of the Vatican it will be a miracle if our current pope heeds the Blessed Mother and performs the consecration. Dominus Vobiscum

Jmichael, x, and anyone who read it...I was referring to comments that slur every religious person,Read More and religion in general. Their are religious people that are truly asinine and repulsive. My point as some just stated above, lets not call it all bad because of a few. I am going to rewrite the blog, to make it more coherent. Thanks for your wanting to clarify, and I will as well......
jMichael April 18, 2014 at 02:50 am
Fortified, my friend. Noted and understood. Regards.
Fortified- AKA Carlos Danger April 18, 2014 at 03:56 am
ok, well.....I'll make this simple. 830 comments, and I am not going to make any groundbreakingRead More news. However, a simple self-check for some. Their are always going to be people who we agree, or disagree, love, loathe, and more. While some comments made points that we can learn from, their are many comments that have no point other than throwing mud. I am not immune to such. I understand the feelings, and might understand why. When we see the worst of the worst on TV who are yelling at funerals, and telling others they are damned to burn forever just because they are gay, it stirs emotions. I don't like that either. However, the 90% of Christians we never hear from are pretty much like everyone else, just trying to find some peace. Most believe as they go to church, and many just hope their is a heaven and feel good just going to church. Some go because everyone else in the house goes. Some, silently do good human work helping others in need, never broadcasting how they help. This 90% are not your enemies. God is not your enemy. The ones who made comments grouping all religious people, and/or religions as bad, yet claim it is for the intolerance of religion..........are taking the 10% and burdening 100% of believers. THAT is the definition of intolerance. -------lets be clear-----You can't take 10% of something, and smear 100% in the name of tolerance------. While most on both sides here will claim to aspire tolerance, we all have our own quirks that can push us over the edge and claim all of one group is bad. Their are only a few that have the majority of the disparaging posts. And in the spirit of that, I acknowledge that a few commenters made the majority of mud throwing.
