This is a solid neighborhood spot. Delicious seasonal dishes and the drinks are also very good. It's a fun place to sit at the bar and eat if the wait for a table is long. Even on a Saturday night, the service was impressive.

This New American restaurant prides itself on using local, seasonal ingredients, including herbs grown on a roof on its Carlton Avenue block. Inside the dark wood dining room, dishes such as oysters in a squash and shallot sauce, salmon with walnuts and a Vermont cheddar burger are served, along with specialty cocktails. James offers a half-price burger special on Mondays and a three-course Sunday supper. Except on holidays, reservations are restricted to parties of six or more.

Housed in a brownstone on Carlton, James is precisely the sort of neighborhood place I want to love. The food is really exceptionally good and we've eating there many times and recommended to friends. The lower rating is due to the waiters, lack of reservations and long waits for seating. But it's a small space so my beef is really those waiters. They are consistently rude, act as if they are doing you a favor by doing their job of serving, unhelpful and unapologetic -- even after they have charged you wrongly. If the owner got the waiters to be a bit less obnoxious my rating would be 5, or 41/2 because that B-rating is, frankly, a bit of an appetite killer.
