Adopt Me: Sandy and Geneva

A 4-year-old Shih Tzu who survived for weeks with a major leg injury, and a 1-year-old calico who was stranded in the cold for days, need new homes.

Sandy, a 4-year-old Shih Tzu, was found in the middle of Arnow Avenue in the Bronx with half of her front leg torn off and the bone exposed. Somehow, she had been living with the injury for several weeks.

"She was pretty much almost dead," said Sean Casey, the shelter's founder.

She was initially brought to the city's Animal Care and Control. But they couldn't keep her. "She either had to be taken in by an animal rescue or she was going to be euthanized. So we agreed to take her," he said.

After surgery and three weeks in the hospital, Sandy's injury has now healed and she's ready to become your new best friend. She also gets along well with other dogs.

"She's a sweetheart," said Sean Casey staffer Alexandra Sherman. "When she first came here she was very nervous. But she learned to trust us," she said, adding, "Now

she looks up at you all affectionately; you can tell she's grateful."

No special care is needed for Sandy's leg, but she does have severely dry eyes, and needs eye drops twice a day, Casey said.

Geneva, a 1-year-old calico, was found by a mail carrier in Sheepshead Bay in late October.

"She was freezing cold and crying," Casey said.

After the mail carrier ran into Geneva several days in a row, she couldn't hold out any longer. She decided to bring the kitty home, but her own cats didn't agree with the plan.

Since then Geneva has been living at the shelter. She keeps getting overlooked because she's shy.

"She tends to sit in the back of her cage, which is probably the reason she has been overlooked," Casey said.

But once she gets to know you, she's very affectionate. She loves to be pet and is a good "lap cat," Casey and Sherman said.

Both Geneva and Sandy are spayed, dewormed, treated to prevent fleas & ticks and are up to date with vaccinations. Geneva's adoption fee is $100.00 and Sandy's is $200. The fee includes one free veterinary exam, one free month of pet health insurance and a microchip.
