Where to Go With the Kids: Memorial Day Weekend Edition

Our weekend calendar of children's events in Prospect Heights and beyond for Memorial Day Weekend, 2012.

 

Saturday, May 26 

Note: All Brooklyn Public Libraries will be closed for Memorial Day Weekend from Saturday, May 26 through Monday, May 28.

 Not only are there over 300 vendors offering African, Caribbean, and African-American food, crafts, and clothing, there's also roving musicians as well as face painting and crafts for kids at the Children's Village. Ashland Place and Hanson Place, noon to 10 p.m. Free. 

 Great for older kids as well as adults, there's a great line-up of African dance performers all weekend long, see link for details. 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Brooklyn Academy of Music Howard Gilman Opera House, 30 Lafayette Ave. at Ashland Place, tickets $20 and up, half price for kids 16 and under. 

Greenlight Kids Story Time , Fort Greene's own Ted and Betsy Lewin are awill read from their latest books (one about Kensington Stables) and lead a craft project. Ages 3-7. , 686 Fulton St. (at S Portland St), 11 a.m., Free.

 Rides and games for kids of all ages, plus a trapeze show, Miss Vicenta and her Royal White Bengal Tigers and eqestrian Artistry performed by The Riding Donnerts with Miss Mercedes Ballerina on Horseback. 3159 Flatbush Ave. (Aviator Sports and Events Center), 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. $5 admission (rides and performances are extra). 

 The Carousel is open Thursdays – Sundays and school holidays, 12 to 5 p.m. $2 per ride; $9 for a book of five tickets. Enter Prospect Park at the Willink entrance, located at Ocean and Flatbush Avenues and Empire Boulevard.

There are more than 250 species of birds in Prospect Park. See some of them at this weekly event that is engaging for both older children and adults. The Audubon Center at the Boathouse (just inside the Lincoln Road/Ocean Ave. entrance to Prospect Park), 12-1:30 p.m., Free.

Lefferts House Events Today the historic house is hosting , where kids can spread manure, till soil and plant potatoes. Once the planting is done, kids wash up, churn some fresh butter and spread it on freshly baked cornbread made on-site over an open fire. Lefferts Historic House at Prospect Park (Use entrance at Empire Boulevard and Flatbush and Ocean Avenues), 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Kids free, $3 suggested for adults.

 Make all-natural and recycled crafts with a new project each week. The Audubon Center at the Boathouse (just inside the Lincoln Road/Ocean Ave. entrance to Prospect Park). 1-2 p.m., all ages, Free.

Brooklyn Children's Museum Events The museum has events for kids all day. See their schedule here. 145 Brooklyn Ave. bet. St. Marks and Prospect. Free with admission of $7.50 for everyone 1 year and older.  

Puppetworks' The Jungle Book Rudyard Kipling's 1894 fables of India
with an original song score adapted for Marionettes. Suggested for kids 3+. Reservations suggested at 718-965-3391 or puppetworks@verizon.net. 338 Sixth Ave. at Fourth Street. 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. $8 adults, $7 kids (note, no credit cards accepted). 

Transit Museum: "Your Attention Ladies and Gentlemen!" Kids learn the history of the subway’s public address announcements and then head to the Technology Lab where they become the conductor, creating announcements of their own. For ages 5+ New York Transit Museum, Corner of Boerum Pl & Schermerhorn St, 1:30 p.m., Free with museum admission (adults $7, kids 2-17 and seniors $5).  

Prospect Park Zoo Events On Saturdays and Sundays, there are events for kids going on all day including sea lion feedings, keeper chats, close-up encounters with individual animals and more. See today's schedule here. , 450 Flatbush Avenue. Free with zoo admission of $8 adults, $5 kids 3-12.

Lefferts House Events Today this historic house is open from noon to 6 p.m. and is hosting Second Floor Tours every half hour. Free for kids 16 and under, $3 suggested for adults.

 There are no special activities here today, but thanks to Memorial day, the center, with its cafe and interactive exhibits including a giant bird's nest that kids can climb in, is open from noon to 4 today. The Audubon Center at the Boathouse (just inside the Lincoln Road/Ocean Ave. entrance to Prospect Park). Free.

Sea Lion Feeding This daily event features the Prospect Park Zoo sea lions showing off their dives, catching fish mid-air and other tricks. , 450 Flatbush Avenue, 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m., Free with zoo admission of $8 adults, $5 kids 3-12.
