Top Stories: Your Summer in Prospect Heights

The season in review.

We've compiled a short list of the biggest news stories to happen this summer, since Labor Day is upon us. Sure, it's technically still summer for a few more weeks, but in our hearts we all know that it's really autumn now.

So take a look at the summer that was in Prospect Heights:

The Heat of the 2013 Mayoral Election
This has been a topsy-turvy election for sure. And with just more than a week to go before Primary Day, it's not over yet. But we have a much clearer picture than we did at the end of May, when Anthony Weiner had just entered the race and Christine Quinn was the front-runner by a mile.

Judgement Day for Stop-and-Frisk
This summer was a reckoning for the controversial police practice that is deeply unpopular in Brooklyn. While Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly fought to keep the practice in place, the City Council passed a law aimed to curb the way it's used, and a Manhattan judge found stop-and-frisk unconstitutional. So while the fight is far from over, things have tilted in favor of those working to end stop-and-frisk.

The VMA's Come to Brooklyn
Love them or hate them, impressed or depressed, the VMA's were probably the biggest event of the inaugural year for the Barclays Center. Sure, the Nets hosting a playoff series was a big deal, but for sheer spectacle it's hard to beat pop music's marquee names all in one place.

Brooklyn Nets Blockbuster Trade
The other big story of the summer was also about who was coming to the Barclays Center — and what uniform they were going to wear. The Nets pulled off a mega-trade with the Boston Celtics this summer that sent much of their bench up north in exchange for veteran megastars Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, among others. It's a sports story that's tough to top for sheer excitement.
