What’s non-essential? Con-Ed says to turn off televisions, computers, microwaves, dishwashers, washers and dryers and, yes, air conditioners. (You can keep your fridge on, but don’t open the door.)

Wondering if you’re in the affected area?

According to Con-Ed there are two affected areas. The boundaries for the first one is Newtown Creek to the north, Pacific Street to the south, Graham Street to the east, and the East River to the west.

The second area is bounded by 18th Avenue and Ditmas Avenue to the north, Shore Boulevard and Shore Parkway to the south, Flatbush Avenue to the east, and East 15th and 16th Streets to the west.”

They add: “Customers can report power interruptions or service problems as well as view service restoration information online at www.conEd.com and on their cell phones and PDAs. Customers may also call Con Edison at 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). When reporting an outage, customers should have their Con Edison account number available. If possible, and report whether their neighbors also have lost power.”
