As Temperatures Soar, NYC Cooling Centers Will Be Open

With a heat advisory in effect through Thursday, here are five places you can go, for free, to stay cool.

Temperatures are expected to soar today and tomorrow. For anyone without air conditioning, it can be brutal. But for some, it can be life-threatening.

Heat waves are particularly dangerous for children, seniors, people with cardiovascular disease, and those taking psychotropic and other medications, according to the city's Office of Emergency Management. In July and August of 2006, extreme heat claimed 46 lives.
