Clara Barton Basketball Roundup

Both the girls and boys teams lost on Thursday night.

Thursday proved to be a rough day for both basketball teams at Clara Barton as the girls failed to win their second game of the season and the boys lost their season opener.

Brooklyn Collegiate 54, Clara Barton 14

In Brooklyn Collegiate High School the Lady Panthers ran into arguably the most talented team in the Brooklyn A East Division. Following a thrilling season opening win over Franklin K. Lane, the Lady Panthers were overmatched and fell to the Lady Lions 54 to 14.

"[Brooklyn Collegiate] are definitely talented but today we had a lot of turnovers," said Head Coach Michael Bedell.

Bedell's team managed only two points in the opening quarter and trailed 25 to 4 at halftime. The Lady Panthers (1-1) were never ever able to recover from a rough first half. Their head coach plans to work on a few things before the team's next game.

"We have to do a better job in our half court offense and taking care of the ball," Bedell said. The Lady Panthers will look to improve upon their second half performance, in which they scored just 10 points,  on Tuesday as they host Brooklyn Technical High School.

Brooklyn Studio Secondary School 38, Clara Barton 34 (2 OT)

The Panthers opened their season against Brooklyn Studio Secondary School for the second straight season.  However unlike last season they were unable to pull out a close win. Joshua Salcedo lead Barton with 14 points but turnovers and poor free throw shooting hurt the Panthers the entire game.

Neither team lead by more than three points throughout regulation in what was a back and forth contest. The Panthers, 0-1, held the ball for the final shot of regulation with the game tied at 26 but Junior center Travis James missed a shot at the buzzer, sending the game to overtime. Both teams only mustered four points in overtime and a second extra session was necessary.  In the second overtime, Barton missed easy scoring chances while the Knights connected on two three pointers to outscore them 8 to 4 hand the Panthers a 38-34 loss.

"We had our chances but we missed two layups and had three turnovers [in the second overtime]," said head coach Robert Sprance. "We shot 11 for 22 for the line and that cost us the game."

Sprance plans to have his team focus on free throws and converting layups before their next game against the Cobble Hill School of American Studies as they look to get their first win of the season.
