Cardinals End 3 Game Slide

VanBuckley and Nelson score 21 apiece to power the Cards to victory.

Following the Prospect Heights Cardinals home loss to Bedford Academy one week ago, captain Eze VanBuckley spoke candidly about leading his team by example.  On Wednesday at home against Brooklyn Technical High School VanBuckley's play led the way.

The senior forward scored 21 points and was dominant in the paint as the Cardinals dropped the Engineers 65 to 56.   The victory over Brooklyn Tech ended a three game losing streak for Prospect Heights (2-3).

This was the best game of the season," said VanBuckley.  "This is the one that can get us back on our feet.  We ended a three game losing streak and now we are 2-3."

The Cardinals took control of their matchup with the Engineers in the first half as they built a ten-point lead.  However, Tech would prove to be resilient and cut the Prospect Heights advantage to three points at haftime.  In the second half, VanBuckley was not the only one to play hard as junior Kamal Nelson appeared to be rejuvenated after a rough first half.

"I just stopped thinking so much in the second half," said Nelson. "The whole team had more energy but in the second half I stopped thinking and started taking better shots."

Nelson also scored 21 points and scored seven consecutive points in the third quarter as Cardinals increased their lead back up to double digits.  Although, Prospect Heights played inspired basketball, Brooklyn Tech would make it a six-point game with three and a half minutes left to play.  VanBuckley stepped up and scored six of his teams final 11 points to lead the Cardinals to their second victory of the season.

"To put them away in the fourth quarter we played hard, passed the ball and executed our plays," stated VanBuckley. "If we can do this every game it will be great."  The Cards will look to continue their energetic play on Friday as they go for their first road win of season as they battle Acorn High School.
