Brooklyn Girl Brodsky Crashes Out of US Open Qualifying

Suffers 6-0, 6-0 setback to Stephanie Dubois of Canada in opening round

Gail Brodsky's stay in the US Open was a short one this year.

Brodsky, who was born and raised in Coney Island and trained throughout the borough, but now lives in California for training purposes, was the first player to lose in this year's US Open yesterday afternoon. Unable to find an answer to the counterpunching game of her opponent, Brodsky lost 6-0, 6-0 to world No. 95 Stephanie Dubois in just 40 minutes.

Brodsky struggled with the timing on her shots throughout the match, winning just 35 percent of her first serve points (compared to 90 percent for Dubois) and committing 22 unforced errors.

Despite yesterday's loss, the last 12 months have been a breakout period for the Brooklynite. Ranked No. 647 in the world rankings in August 2010, she won two $10,000 events in Portugal (September 2010) and Guadeloupe (January 2010), and recently won a $25,000 tournament last month in Spain. Earlier this month, she reached a career high ranking of No. 217.

Brodsky turned pro at the 2008 US Open after becoming the No. 1 ranked junior player in the country. In her previous appearances at the event, she lost in the first round of the main draw in 2008 and 2009.
