Local Artisans, Food, Kids Events and More at P.S. 9 Craft Fair

Prospect Heights Craft Fair is more than just a place to buy a Mother's Day gift. It's also a way to support your community.

Sure, the at P.S. 9 is a great place to pick-up a Mother's Day gift or hand-knit sweater for your friend's new baby.

But even if you don't want to shop, stopping by for a raffle ticket is a great way to support not only your local school, but also your local artists.

About 15 of the 44 artisans at the fair are from Prospect Heights and the rest are from other parts of Brooklyn.

“I’d like to call it our version of the Brooklyn Flea,” said Faye Rimalovski, one of the organizers of the annual event, now in its third year. “It’s not just a school craft fair, it’s a community event.”

Not only will there be locally crafted jewelry, dishes, kids and adult clothing, kids toys (sock monkeys galore!) greeting cards and other gifts, you can also pick-up lunch from (Italian) or Hermelinda (Mexican) as well as granola, popcorn, hot sauce and other locally made food items. Plus there will be events for kids all day including storytelling, music, arts & crafts, and animated shorts, and for $5 you can partake of the supervised drop-off option for 30 minutes of peaceful shopping.

Proceeds from the event support P.S. 9’s arts programs, including art, dance and workshops with such groups as (acrobatics), Studio in a School, and the Guggenheim Museum.

Can’t make it? You can still donate by buying a set of $20 raffle tickets here. Each vendor will be donating a prize, so there will be 44 winners.

“To eat, to drink, to shop and have fun, and to do it all within your neighborhood, it’s just a wonderful community event,” Rimalovski said.

The 3rd Annual Prospect Heights Craft Fair takes place on Saturday, April 9th, 2011, from 11:00am-6:00pm at P.S. 9, 80 Underhill Ave., between St. Marks and Bergen.
