Should Marijuana Be Legalized?

Prospect Heights' Green Party candidate for congress thinks it should be.


At last night's debate between three of the four candidates vying for congress in Prospect Heights' 8th Congressional District, Green Party candidate . 
The remark referred to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's support of rival candidate Hakeem Jeffries' state senate bill  for possession of small amounts of marijuana.


"New York State decriminalized the possession of a small amount of marijuana almost 40 years ago but unfortunately the NYC police department has refused to comply with the law. Instead police arrest tens of thousands of New Yorkers annually for what is legally just a traffic violation. Rather than making yet another minor adjustment to the law, let's just declare the war on drugs a failure and end it, along with NYPD's harassment of young people of color. Drug abuse should be treated as a matter of public health, not criminal justice, and our resources should be devoted to treatment," Beavan said in a written statement.
