Meet Prospect Heights' New Commanding Officer

Captain Eddie Lott will be at tonight's 77th Precinct Community Council Meeting.

Did you know that every few years, the NYPD brings in someone new to head each police precinct? The reason for this is to bring in fresh energy and prevent burnout among commanders.

So, after three years, Dep. Inspector Elvio Capocci is being moved to head several command posts in the Bronx, and Captain Eddie Lott is moving fro the Bronx to head the 77th Precinct, which covers most of Prospect Heights, plus Crown Heights and Weeksville.

Lott has a deep connection to his precinct: his wife grew up in Crown Heights and the two met there.

The father of two girls, 8 and 11, Lott grew up near Cooper Park in Williamsburg. He spent most of his career heading the detective squad of Brownsville's 73rd Precinct, and most recently was the commanding officer of PSA 8 in the Bronx, which patrolled several public housing developments.

In a small meeting last week, Capocci introduced Lott to members of Community Board 8 and of the 77th Precinct's Community Council. Those gathered said they were thrilled at the choice of Lott as Capocci's replacement, although not happy to see the popular commander go.

"When Dep. Inspector Capocci told me was leaving it was sad," said James Caldwell, president of the 77th Precinct's Community Council. "We really worked well with him."

But, said a clergy member, "I think if we had to have anyone to replace you," the man said, pointed at Capocci, "it would be you," he said, pointing to Lott.

In his goodbye speech, Capccoi echoed the sentiment.

"You never want to be succeeded by anyone, but he's a fantastic choice," Capocci said.

Lott, in turn, said he was pleased to be assigned to the 77th Precinct.

"I'm truly excited and look forward to the challenge," he said, radiating with enthusiasm. He added, "My mother in law is still there so I have a very vested interest in the community."

He invites residents to come to him with ideas and concerns. "My door is always open."

Say goodbye to Dep. Inspector Capocci and welcome Captain Eddie Lott at tonight's monthly meeting of the 77th Precinct's Community Council.

The meeting takes place at Calvary Community Church 1575 Saint Johns Place (C/of Buffalo Ave & Saint Johns Place) at 7:30 p.m.
