NYC Christmas Tree Recycling Begins

Leave your tree at the curb between Jan. 2 and Jan. 19 and it will be turned into mulch by the Department of Sanitation. Mulchfest takes place Jan. 12-13.

It may feel like you just put up your tree, but for those ready to leave the holidays behind, Christmas tree recycling has begun.

Leave your bare, unbagged tree at the curb anytime between Wednesday, Jan. 2 and Saturday, Jan. 19, and it will be picked up by the Department of Sanitation.

All trees left at the curb during this period will have a second life as mulch for the city's parks, playing fields, and community gardens.

Make sure to remove all tree stands, tinsel, lights, ornaments and plastic bags from the trees.

The DOS encourages residents to put out their discarded trees at curbside as early as possible during the collection period.

If you wish to have some of the mulch for your own garden and see the chipping in action, you can participate in NYC Parks & Recreation's Mulchfest by bringing your trees to designated sites throughout the five boroughs on Saturday or Sunday, January 12 & 13, 2013, from 10 am to 2 pm. If you want to take home mulch, make sure to bring your own bag.
