Marty Markowitz Backs Quinn for NYC Mayor

Brooklyn Borough President says its time for a woman to be mayor.

Brooklyn’s biggest cheerleader, Borough President Marty Markowitz, announced he would be jumping over Brooklynites Bill Thompson and Bill de Blasio to endorse Manhattan resident Christine Quinn for mayor, reported The Daily News.

“I mean no disrespect to the other candidates. But I think she is the right choice,” said Markowitz. “And I think it is time for a woman to be mayor of New York City.”

“This is like receiving Brooklyn’s ‘Good Housekeeping’ seal of approval,” responded Quinn.

Meanwhile, polls are finding that once-disgraced, former Queens Congressman Anthony Weiner would trail Quinn in a hypothetical Democratic primary runoff and that Democratic voters still have not formed an opinion of at least one of the other mayoral candidates Bill Thompson, Bill de Blasio, John Liu or Sal Albanese, partly due to a lack of name recognition, reports The Wall Street Journal.

An NBC/Marist poll asked the most basic question of 556 registered Democrats, Who's running in the race to succeed Mayor Michael Bloomberg?

And the answers were telling: While only 18 percent and 15 percent of voters were “unsure or never heard of” Quinn and Weiner, respectively, 35 and 36 percent were unclear of who Thompson and de Blasio were, respectively; 28 percent did not recognize Liu; and a whopping 55 percent of voters were unsure or never heard of Sal Albanese.

Quinn and Weiner both are high-profile candidates, political consultants reasoned of their huge popularity. The biggest difference is that Weiner’s profile is far more polarizing, while Quinn’s powerful role as speaker and close relationship with Bloomberg has allowed her to benefit from his publicity.
