Liu: Weiner, Spitzer Campaigns Offensive to Women

Which is more offensive? Spitzer and Weiner's past behavior or John Liu's suggestion that those actions are a "women's issue."

By Matthew Hampton

City Comptroller John Liu, who is currently a distant also-ran in the race for mayor, had some choice words for Anthony Weiner and Eliot Spitzer, according to Politicker.

During an event at city hall Tuesday, Liu called their campaigns "an affront to women," the website reported, rather than a defect of the political system.

Liu also reportedly said that women of New York have every right to be angry that Weiner and Spitzer, who were drummed out of office for incidents involving lewd conduct and prostitution, respectively, could be allowed to assume positions of incredible power in the city.

Certainly Spitzer's entrance into the comptroller's race has shaken things up in a way heretofore unexpected.

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer — an already milquetoast candidate — now seems like the prototypical boring nerd trying not to get "steamrolled." Pretty soon, he'll have to debate a man once thought to have a shot at the presidency.

And it only took Weiner a month to take over the driver's seat in a mayoral race that up until mid-June seemed like a coronation for New York's would-be-first female mayor, Council Speaker Christine Quinn.

What do you think? Should the women of New York rise as one against Spitzer and Weiner? Or is it sexist for Liu to suggest that lewd behavior and prostitution is only an issue to women?
