Jumaane Williams Escorted by NYPD Through West Indian Parade

In an effort to not repeat last year's wrongful arrest of the City Councilman, police kept close to his side during this weekend's West Indian Day Parade.

During this year’s West Indian Day Parade, Councilman Jumaane Williams had his own entourage of police, in an effort to not repeat his mistaken identity arrest at the parade last year, says the New York Daily News.

Williams, D-Brooklyn, insisted that he did not request the special police detail, and it did not appear that other city officials had similar escorts.

“I think this has become one of the safest days for me,” joked Williams, to the paper.

Last year at the parade, – along with Kirsten John Foy, a former top aide to Public Advocate Bill de Blasio – after the men had entered a restricted area near the Brooklyn Museum. Williams and Foy had been previously given permission to enter the area by other officers. 

“Last year, the officers didn’t know who I was. This year, because of what happened, everyone knows who I am,” Williams told the paper.
