James Backs off 'BAM South' Housing Project: Report

Paper says James is balking on plan to build new housing, retail space in Fort Greene.

City Councilwoman Letitia James has expressed new concerns about a plan that would bring housing, performance spaces and more to the neighborhood surrounding the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the New York Post reported.

The project, which would create apartments, a library and retail and performance spaces, would cost roughly $130 million and be the lynchpin of an effort to bring more tourists and local residents to the area's attractions.

According to the paper, James mentioned in a city council hearing this week that she wanted the project to include more affordable housing, and come with a guarantee that union labor would be used during construction.

The Post quoted an anonymous Democratic operative, saying her new-found concerns have more to do with her impending election fight than anything else.
