It's The End of an Era: No More Overnight Delivery From USPS

Despite months of protests across the country, overnight single-piece first class mail delivery will end as of Sunday, July 1.

Beginning July 1, overnight single piece first class mail delivery will end. Henceforth, delivery will take two to three days.

Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe announced in a statement earlier in the year that once first-class overnight service is terminated, he will then begin closure of half the mail sorting plants in the country and cut hours from 25 to 75 percent in half the nation’s post offices. No less than forty thousand jobs will be eliminated.

This is the most recent in several blows to the USPS in the past year, including multiple post office closures. In March, Rita Farone, who had operated a post office on Columbia Street in Red Hook for 15 years, that her business was one of 3,700 nationwide that would be shut down.

When Patch reached out to the Times Plaza Post Office to comment on the elimination of single piece first class mail delivery, one representative contacted by phone was unaware of the announcement and had not yet been apprised of cuts in service hours.

"You are speaking to the blind," she said. "I have no idea what you are talking about."
