DOT Will Bring New Plaza Street West Bike Lane Plans to CB6

Two years after plans to upgrade Plaza Street West's bike lane were shelved, the DOT will return with new proposals for Community Board 6.

A two-way bike lane – or a protected lane – for Plaza Street West could come true after all, providing a safer route for cyclists traveling between Prospect Park West and Flatbush Avenue, says the Brooklyn Paper.

The Department of Transportation will unveil plans at an April 19 Community Board 6 meeting for a north-bound lane – two years after it was first proposed – says the Paper.

Cycling advocates say that the DOT’s teetering was a result of .

“There’s a sense that [the city] held back on the project because of the lawsuit – but I’m glad they’re doing it now,” cycling advocate Eric McClure told the Paper.

According to the article, the city will reveal proposals at the meeting for a two-way unprotected lane (one that is not separated from traffic) and for an alternate one-way lane that is protected by a lane of parking.

Some residents of Plaza Street West are not happy about the return of the bike lane plan, says the Paper, writing in a letter to city officials last year that the lane would “taint the tree-lined street” and make driving more difficult.

When Patch asked in November whether on Plaza Street, 60 percent of readers thought that the curves of the street were too dangerous for a non-protected bike lane, while 17 percent thought the proliferation of bike lanes were “overkill” at Grand Army Plaza.

What a waste of money.

I agree! Why let all of these cars park on the street for free when you can make it safer for everyone, including taxpaying cyclists who need a safe place to ride!

I totally agree with Transparent. I live on Plaza St. West. I have stood and watched the bike traffic in the existing lane. There is hardly any. Adding another bike lane would significantly narrow the street. IT IS A TOTAL WASTE OF TAX DOLLARS -- NOT TO MENTION UNFATHOMABLY STUPID. I would be a little more sympathetic if bikers actually followed the traffic rules. They don't. A. Schwartz
