Council Gives Foam Containers The Boot

Containers have 18 months left until they vanish.

New York City is on its way to becoming a foam-free city, thanks to passage of a bill that is likely to make foam take-out containers illegal starting in 2015.

According to published reports, the council passed legislation on Thursday night that will make it illegal for restaurants to serve food in polystyrene foam containers, contingent on the results of a study to see if it can be recycled.

If not, the foam containers will be cast into the dust-bin of history — at least in New York City - starting in July 2015.

The decision to rid the city of foam containers was, naturally, one of the final quests of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has also been a crusader against, e-cigarettes, regular cigarettes, trans-fats, large sodas and anything that can be quantified as "real American."

Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio also supported the decision to ban the containers.
