Christine Quinn Touts Ferraro Family Endorsement

It's looking like a good week for City Council Speaker and mayoral candidate Christine Quinn.

Friday afternoon, Quinn tweeted an image her campaign produced on the heels of an endorsement from the family of former vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro.

"Just as our wife and mother promised to pass on a stronger, more just America, we know that as mayor, Christine Quinn will pass on a stronger, more just New York," the family wrote in a statement tweeted by Quinn.

The endorsement is hot on the heels of a new poll, conducted by the New York Times and Siena College, that found Quinn had a nine point lead over her closest Democratic opponent. The poll is the first to give her such a lead since former Congressman Anthony Weiner — who used to hold Ferraro's seat in Congress — entered the race.

Ferraro is considered a pioneer among women in politics as the first woman to appear on a major-party ticket for the White House. She served two terms in Congress in New York — her district covered portions of Queens, including Forest Hills — before being tapped to run with Walter Mondale.

Ferraro passed away in March 2011, and was buried in St. John's Cemetery in Queens.

Last year, a portion of Ascan Avenue in Forest Hills was renamed in honor of her service to New York and Queens.
