Brooklyn Pride Kicks Off This Week

The weeklong series of events celebrates Brooklyn's LGBTQ communities.

Brooklyn Pride, in conjunction with Borough President Marty Markowitz, kicked off a weeklong celebration on Monday for the borough’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities.

On Monday, Markowitz raised a rainbow flag at Brooklyn Borough Hall, along with Kings County District Attorney Charles Hynes; Carol Kelly, LGBT liaison, and Jerry Allred of the Brooklyn Borough President’s Office. Brooklyn Pride co-chairs Mickey Heller and Zully Rolan where also in attendance, as well as representatives of the Brooklyn Community Pride Center. Groups like Gay Men of African Descent, the Brooklyn AIDS Task Force, Brooklyn Men (K)onnect and Brooklyn College LGBT Students also helped to kick off the week of events.

Here’s the schedule of upcoming events:

Wednesday, June 6

6 p.m. – Annual LGBT Pride Celebration at Borough Hall, 209 Joralemon Street, in Downtown Brooklyn. “The King of New York Nightlife” Murray Hill will be honored, as well as Elaine Greeley, executive director of the Brooklyn AIDS Task Force Inc., Ivan Luevanos of GLOBE (Gays and Lesbians of Bushwick Empowered) and Unity Fellowship Church of Christ NYC Senior Bishop Zachary G. Jones.

Thursday, June 7

7 p.m. – A Tribute to Storme DeLarverie, at the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture (53 Prospect Park West, Park Slope)

Friday, June 8

4 p.m. – PRIDE LGBT Youth BBQ, at GLOBE/Make the Road New York (301 Grove Street, Bushwick) 

10 p.m. – THRIVE Party at Chance 11 Lounge (895 Fulton Street, between Vanderbilt and Clinton), hosted by GMAD (Gay Men of African Descent), celebrating its 25th Anniversary. $10 before midnight, $15 after.

Saturday, June 9

Pride Day 2012, at Prospect Park at Bartel-Pritchard Circle and 9th – 15th Streets along Prospect Park West, Park Slope.

9 a.m. – Pride 5K Fun Run (registration begins at 8 a.m.)

Noon to 6 p.m. – Multicultural Festival, with stage performances, a family zone, shopping and food vendors.

Noon to 4 p.m. – Kids Space

7:30 p.m. – Night Pride Parade, up 5th Avenue, from 14th Street to Sterling Place, Park Slope. Featuring MC’s Will Clark and Ron B as Tina Turner.

9 p.m. – After Parade Open Mic Youth Event at GMAD (44 Court St., 10th floor, Downtown Brooklyn).
