Truck Jackknife Backs Up Traffic for Hours Near Atlantic Yards

Accident happened after tractor-trailer tried to turn from Carlton Avenue to Dean Street.

A tractor-trailer backed up traffic for hours after it jackknifed at the corner of Carlton Avenue and Dean Street shortly before 6 p.m. tonight., a witness said.

The semi clipped a minivan as it tried to turn from Carlton to Dean, catching the rear part of the truck in the van's fender, said Wayne Bailey, who lives nearby.

"He couldn’t back up and he couldn’t go forward," without "tearing up" the minivan, said Baiely. After failing to find the van owner to have him move the vehicle, the very "apologetic" driver called a tow truck to move the minivan out of the way.

Meanwhile traffic backed up on Dean Street including three city buses. The stuck drivers eventually lost it.

"They were yelling and screaming and driving all over the sidewalks," said Bailey (see video for the sidewalk driving).

Although the semi got stuck near Atlantic Yards, it doesn't appear to be connected to the project.

As of 8 p.m. tonight the semi was still stuck. Does anyone know what time it eventually got out? Let us know in the comments.
