Robbers Attack Bicyclist With Golf Club

Biker taken to Methodist Hospital after early-morning mugging on Dean Street at Grand Avenue.

Police are looking for a group of men who attacked and robbed a 23-year-old as he was riding his bike on Dean Street.

The cyclist was going home at about 2:40 a.m. on June 29, when, at the intersection of Grand Avenue, a group of men surrounded the man on the street and then one of them swung a golf club, knocking the him to the ground, police said.

After the man fell, one of the thieves grabbed his backpack and took off. The bag held a cell phone, wallet and cash worth a total of $600, according to a police report.

A man driving by stopped and took the victim to Methodist Hospital, where he was treated for a shoulder injury and scrapes to the right side of his body, the report said.

In January, there was a similar attack a block away in which a man was bashed in the head with a metal cane  on Bergen Street.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477). The public can also submit their tips on the Crime Stoppers' website or by texting their tips to CRIMES (274637), then enter TIP577.  All tips are strictly confidential.

Does anyone think this "golf club" crime is particularly outrageous, having been committed within shouting distance of the 77th Precinct Annex??? It's time we received the Police attention we deserve to what is obviously an escalating situation. We need neighborhood foot patrols, unmarked patrol cars, and a manned Police presence at the Annex for the foreseeable future! It's worked before, and the statistics be damned, it will work again! Inspector Elvio Capocci, this is no longer a matter of allocation by the numbers. Boots on the ground and establishing respect again for peace and the law needs to happen here quickly before this gets out-of-hand again as it did in the not too distant past. Learn from past mistakes and act!
