Police Blotter: Woman Cheated in $9,500 Scam, Underhill Burglary, More

Woman Cheated Out of $9,500

 A 72-year old woman was cheated out of $9,500 by a couple promising a big return on her investment.

The woman was on Washington Avenue near Lincoln Place at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 23, when a couple approached her, showed her a bag of cash, and told her if she gave them money she would get lots more in return. (The report did not specify the details of the con story.) They drove the woman to her bank on Court Street, where she withdrew the cash from her savings account. Once the couple had the money, they took off, leaving the woman on the street, according to a police report.

Underhill Avenue Burglary

A thief made off with $3,000 worth of electronics from an Underhill Avenue apartment on June 21.

A 32-year-old woman came back to her apartment, located between Bergen and St. Marks to find her front door open and a Macintosh laptop and power cord, a digital camera, an external hard drive and two iPods taken. Police suspect the thief came through the kitchen window, which was unlocked, and then left through the front door, according to a police report.

 

Two Car Thefts:

  • A 51-year-old man parked his brother’s 1989 Chevy van on Underhill Avenue at the intersection of Atlantic on Wednesday afternoon, June 22, leaving the keys on the dashboard while he “ran to the store.” He came back five minutes later and the car was gone, according to a police report.
  • A 1996 Saturn was stolen from St. Marks Avenue between Classon and Franklin avenues sometime between 8:30 p.m. Wednesday June 22 and 3:30 p.m. the next day, according to a police report.

 

Bike Theft

A 28-year-old man reported that someone stole his $700 bike (plus the lock and helmet) from the hallway of a building on Sterling Place at the corner of Classon Avenue sometime between 11:25 p.m. and 11:45 p.m. on Tuesday, June 21, according to a police report.

 

Car Break-In

A 2011 Subaru Outback parked on Bergen Street between Grand and Classon avenues was broken into sometime between 4:20 p.m. Wednesday June 22 and 7:30 a.m. the next day. The thief smashed the rear window and about $470 worth of property, including a Sony PSP, a Garmin Nuvi GPS and a Leap Frog toy phone, where stolen, according to a police report.
