Police Blotter: Abigail Break-In, Daytime Hold-Up and More

Burglary at Abigail Wine Bar and Cafe

was broken into last week and cash and several bottles of wine taken.

The thieves appear to have come in through a window of the restaurant that was accidentally left unlocked at about 3 a.m. on Wednesday, May 4, setting off the alarm, according to a police report.

The thieves broke several bottles of wine, and made off with several others, as well as about $125 in cash from the register, said Abigail Hitchcock, owner of the eatery, which is located ,at the corner of Classon Avenue and St. Johns Place. 

There were also several open bottles left on one of the tables, she said. “We were picturing them slugging the wine,” she said.

Other than that nothing was taken. Hitchcock appears to have taken the burglary in stride.

“It’s always a violation and it’s always disconcerting,” she said. But, she added, “It’s New York City. You want to think that it’s not going to happen to you, but at the end of the day it wasn’t a lot of money and nobody was hurt, and that’s the most important thing.”

 

Daytime Hold-Up on Classon Avenue

A thug held up two delivery men Saturday, making off with $4,577 in checks and cash, according to a police report.

The deliverymen had parked the truck on Classon Avenue at St. Johns Place. At about 3:15 p.m., one of the men was returning to his truck when a man came up to him, showed him a gun, told him to get in the cab of his truck. The second delivery man arrived and was also told to get in the cab. The men gave the thug the goods and the man fled, according to the report.

 

ID Theft Leads to $4,172 in Charges at Best Buy

Someone used the personal information of a man and woman living on Park Place to charge thousands of dollars in their names, according to police reports.

The thief opened Best Buy cards in each of their names and on May 2 charged $2,972 on the man’s card and $1,200 on the woman’s card at Best Buy, according to the report.

 

More Car Break-Ins

 At least three more cars were broken into this past week:

  • A car was broken into on Washington Avenue between St. Marks and Bergen either on Monday night, May 2, or early the next morning. The window was broken and the radio stolen, according to a police report.
  • A woman’s purse containing her wallet and iPod, were stolen from a car parked on Vanderbilt Avenue at Bergen late in the evening on May 3, according to a police report. The door's lock was broken during the theft.
  • A side door window was shattered on a car parked on Bergen Street between Carlton and Vanderbilt between 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Nothing was taken, according to a report.
