Halloween 2012: Tips to Have a Safe and Spooky Time

Halloween is all about finding your inner spook, but there shouldn't be anything scary about the prospect of trick-or-treating in Prospect Heights.

The NYPD has provided these tips for kids and parents to follow to come Oct. 31 to ensure that the night goes off without a hitch: 

• Go trick-or-treating with your friends, stay out of buildings, homes and elevators when alone. 

• Stay out of strangers' homes or cars, even if they offer you candy.

• Parents should look at all candy and treats before children eat any.

• If you go out at night wear bright-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. 

• Only go trick-or-treating in your own neighborhood; stay close to home. 

• If your mask blocks your vision, take it off before you cross any streets. 

• Walk on the sidewalk and stay out of the streets!

• If you are out trick-or-treating with younger brothers or sisters, stay together. Help them cross the streets, and remember, always cross at the corner and wait for the light. 

• Most importantly, respect other people's property, have fun and enjoy the night!
