Fire at a St. Marks Avenue High-Rise

The fire began in a trash compactor, and is now under control, an FDNY spokesman said.

About 30 firefighters put out a fire in a 14-story building tonight. There were no injuries, an NYPD spokesman said.

The fire started in a trash compactor at 1008 St. Marks Avenue, at Albany Avenue, just before 7:17 p.m., according to the NYPD.

Five firetrucks came to the scene and the fire was under control by 7:41, the spokesman said.

The spokesman didn't have information on the extent of the damage, but said that it was unlikely there was very much due to the location of the fire and how quickly it was put under control.
