Woman Dies in Franklin Avenue Fire

Firefighter and civilian also injured in early morning blaze.

An elderly woman was found dead after an early morning fire swept through a Franklin Avenue apartment building, police said.

The fire broke out just before 4:46 a.m. at 587 Franklin Ave., a four-story building on the corner of Pacific Street. Police found the woman “unconscious and unresponsive” on the second floor. She was pronounced dead on arrival at Interfaith Hospita,  according to the NYPD.

According to the Daily News, the woman was Olga Bates, a 91-year-old retired cafeteria worker, who neighbors described as a “religious, kind” woman who was “independent” and “very strong.”

A firefighter and a civilian suffered minor injuries and were treated at Brooklyn Hospital Center, an FDNY spokesman said.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and the cause of death has not been determined, police said.
