Cops to Hold 24-Hour Crackdown on Talking or Texting While Driving

Drivers caught face a $100 fine and two points on their licenses.

The cops will be cracking down on drivers who text or chat on hand-held cell phones tonight at midnight, according to the NYPD.

The fine for such actions is $100 and an additional two points on the driver's license.

"Driving while texting or talking on a cell phone is dangerous and endangers both drivers and pedestrians," the NYPD said in a news release.

During 2010 the NYPD issued on average 611 summonses a day to drivers using hand-held cell phones, according to the NYPD.

"Just taking your eyes away from the road to make a call or to text can take a life. If the call is that important you should pull over," said Sam Pierre, of Mayor Michael Bloomberg's office at the 77th Police Community Council meeting Monday night.
