Car Fires Strike Prospect Heights

Multiple cars burn on Park Place overnight.

Victims of a spate of fires in Prospect Heights and Crown Heights were waiting beside their burned out cars on Tuesday, mostly for answers.

Near Park Place and Underhill Avenue, Rafael Bernadine examined his damaged Saab, parked under a tree, and was astonished by the damage. His hood was buckled and one headlight had exploded. He said neighbors heard the popping of tires or windows around 2 a.m.

Robert, another fire victim, was alarmed by just how severe the damage to his SUV was.

"It doesn't look like a fire," he said, "it looks like an explosion."

Bernadine said an insurance adjuster who came to assess his car's damage was even surprised.

"One of the surveyors who came over this morning taking photos asked me what kind of accident that I was in, that the airbags deployed. I said I wasn't in one at all," he said. "The fact that he asked me what sort of accident...are you kidding?"

The FDNY is still investigating the incidents. According to a FDNY spokesman, the department is investigating based on a call received at 2 30 a.m. of a car half on fire near New York Avenue on Park Place.
