Brooklyn Rabbi Arrested in Beverly Hills on Sex Abuse Allegations

A man suspected of sex-related offenses in Brooklyn was arrested in Beverly Hills Tuesday.

Menachem Tewel, 30, was arrested around 1:30 p.m. at the JEM Community Center at 9930 South Santa Monica Boulevard at the request of the New York Police Department, said Beverly Hills police Lt. Lincoln Hoshino.

Tewel had a warrant for his arrest on suspicion of two counts of criminal sexual acts and one count of sexual abuse, Hoshino said. One of the victims reportedly lived in Crown Heights. 

He is awaiting extradition to New York, according to Hoshino, who referred questions about the case to NYPD.

Tewel, who also goes by the name Mendel Tevel, is a rabbi and youth worker in Brooklyn, according to a report of the arrest in the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles.

He is accused of abusing four boys who were between the ages of six and 14 at the time the alleged crimes were committed, according to the Jewish Journal, which reports that all four are now adults.
