Assaults Creep Back Up

After violent crime leveled off in October, it began to drift back up in November.

tfter Prospect Heights residents saw , the New York Police Department said . Initially, , but in November it appears that assaults and other violent crimes have begun to creep back up, if only slightly.

According to the "CompStat" numbers, as the police statistics are known, there were 19 assaults in Prospect Heights, Crown Heights and Weeksville – the areas Precinct 77 covers – during the 28 days that proceeded Nov. 21. When compared with the 16 that occured during the same period the previous year, that's almost a 19 percent increase.

A more dramatic spike came among incidents of rape. There were five incidents of rape during the period in 2010 as compared to two in 2009, a 150 percent increase.

A representative of the 77 Precinct could not be reached for comment, but in the past police representatives have noted that these figures are up from record lows in 2009. However, both assaults and rape are up compared to 2008 as well: 33 percent and 61.5 percent, respectively.

Compared to the unprecedentedly safe streets Prospect Heights saw in 2009, most criminal categories, including murder, robbery and burglary, are up. However, grand larceny and auto theft, known as grand larceny auto, are both down compared to last year.

In particular, there has been a dramatic, 12.8 percent reduction in auto theft.
