Bklyn: Brooklyn Public Library Revitalized

Brooklyn Public Library recently launched The Shelby White and Leon Levy Information Commons as well as debuted a new logo.

The Brooklyn Public Library’s logo has gone through many reiterations since the Library’s establishment in 1896. There have been Latin phrases and torches, serifs and script, and now there is Bklyn. Each logo has reflected current popular graphics, indicating the Library’s ongoing support of Brooklyn’s growing and changing population. In the images attached here, check out the mid-century design charm of the 1967 logo used for the BPL Bulletin. (For more peeks at BPL through the ages, we recommend the Library’s blog, Brooklynology.)

This week, the Library launched The Shelby White and Leon Levy Information Commons at Central Library, giving even more reason to do as the new logo suggests: Start Here. The Library is a place to do work and be inspired by books and other tangible learning tools as well as by cutting-edge technology. With outlets for 70 laptop users and 25 workstations with traditional software packages as well as advanced graphic design and audio-visual editing programs, the Info Commons meets the needs of today’s workforce, creators, students and freelancers.

In the Info Commons, you’ll have access to professional and creative technology resources, and staff to assist you. If you’re a writer, a designer or another kind of creative worker, you will discover an inspiring space to work. If you’re a student or researcher, you can access the Library’s growing suite of databases and online research tools. You can reserve one of the Info Commons’s meeting rooms for small-group collaborative thinking, working and creating. And, if you’re developing your career, you will find free classes and seminars for skills advancement and increased expertise.
