10th Annual PowerUP! Competition

It’s that time of year again! Brooklyn Public Library is proud to announce the 10th Annual PowerUP! Business Plan Competition. The PowerUP! program celebrates and rewards the entrepreneurial spirit of Brooklynites and enhances the vitality of the local business community.  Last year, Nidhi Jalan won $15,000 and has since kickstarted her Indian spice kit business Masala Mama, including a successful launch of the company’s new website: http://masalamamaspice.com/

Citi Foundation, as the sole sponsor of PowerUP!, is committed to making Brooklyn a great place to live and work by supporting local entrepreneurship through the business plan competition. This year’s grand prize winner will also receive $15,000, with two second place winners both receiving $5,000. Past winners include Bogota Latin Bistro, Owl & Thistle General Store, and Greenlight Bookstore.

Tonight, Tuesday, February 26th, the Library will begin orientation sessions for this year’s competition. At least one orientation is mandatory to be considered for the grand prize. At the orientation, participants will gain a clear idea of the opportunity provided by PowerUP! and about upcoming business classes at the Library, which will the assist entrepreneurial hopefuls in marketing, financial projections, and creating business plans. Participants will have access to Library resources, including top-of-the-line digital programs available in the Library’s recently opened Information Commons, and will also be connected to business counselors in the community.  The contest is open to all eligible applicants whose businesses require start-up capital.  Additional orientation dates are offered for those unable to attend on Feb. 26th.
