Rain, Sleet or Snow, Ghouls and Gourds Will Go On

No matter what the weather today, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's annual tradition will go on.

The sent word yesterday that even though snow is predicted, the show wil go on.

This year has a Victorian theme that includes flamingo croquet, a flying flea circus, a Victorian toy parlor, and a monocle, mustache, and beard booth. The renowned Mettawee River Theatre Company will also take stage at the Throwback Theatre to lead an old-time waltz with woodland creatures, according to a news release from the garden.

“The grand flair and quirky humor of the Victorian era makes it a natural inspiration for the event-which, while inspired by Halloween, is more about the zany and spectacular rather than the scary and creepy,” said the garden’s Anita Jacobs, who organized the event.

The event will also include its traditional boisterous music, hands-on workshops, larger-than-life puppets, pretend petting zoo, and a children’s-book barn full of authors, the release said.

Kids and adults can make their own egg-shaker maracas to play in the parade, learn about lace, meet carnivorous plants, and visit the pretend petting zoo—or just flaunt their costumes for all to see. The Children’s Book Barn will feature 14 renowned authors and illustrators—many based in Brooklyn—who will give readings and book signings.
