Bike Lanes Arrive on Washington Ave., But No Third Crosswalk For Lincoln Place

Bike Lanes, Pedestrian Islands and Muni-Meters – but no crosswalk for northeast Lincoln Place.

The Washington Avenue  by the DOT is now being put into effect. But while there are a lot of improvements being made, the plan still falls short.

The are currently being installed along Washington Avenue from Atlantic Avenue to Eastern Parkway. Much of Washington Avenue will henceforth be a single lane of vehicular traffic in each direction with parallel lanes dedicated for bicycles. The "No Parking/ Loading Zones" will be installed shortly at many of the commercial corners as will new "Muni-Meters." Raised Pedestrian Safety Islands and traffic restricting painted "Bump-Outs" are also currently being installed according to the DOT's Washington Avenue Safety Plan 2011 which was approved by Community Board #'s 2 and 8. A review of their completed work is scheduled for September.

The request for relief from The Department of Sanitation to relax two of the four days of alternate side of the street parking regulations is still pending.

The other unanswered request is the conspicuously  (see diagram of the spot in the photo gallery above). Lincoln Pl/Washington Ave is unique in that the intersection is so significantly diagonal that the street corners do not align. Three perpendicular crosswalks really are required. The DOT insists on first hearing from the "silent" residents in the area. I can only hope that silence won't be broken by tragedy.
